About Us

Mills & Boon is an imprint of Harlequin Enterprises, a division of HarperCollins Publishers Australia and one of the largest English-language publishers in the world. Mills & Boon has a long history in Australia and has grown to become Australia’s undisputed market leader in romance fiction publishing.

History

Gerald Mills and Charles Boon launched the company in 1908 in London, as a general fiction publisher, turning out books about everything from travel to craft. Included in the large range of authors whose work the company published in those early days were P.G. Wodehouse, Jack London and Georgette Heyer.

Following the Great War, romantic fiction proved immensely popular, quickly becoming a vital and soon a dominant part of the Mills & Boon list. Due to paper rationing in World War II, Charles Boon concentrated solely on publishing romantic fiction, at least for the duration of the war.

In 1971, the Boon family signalled its desire to sell the Mills & Boon business and Harlequin became the parent company. Mills & Boon Australia, established in 1974, was the group’s first foray outside Britain or North America. This was followed by a further period of expansion with the establishment of other subsidiaries and joint ventures in Europe and Japan. In August 2014, Harper Collins’ parent company News Corp completed its acquisition of Harlequin Enterprises from Torstar Corporation.
